Do you want all the comfort and technology in the 2000 S-Class, but find that its $80,000 dollar price

tag will empty your wallet? Well, maybe you should consider buying this new 2001 C-Class. With a

price of just $36,000, this new C-Class gives you all of the S-Class' technology for a much lower

price. Mercedes has also added a hatchback to its lineup, but Mercedes isn't sure whether or not it

should sell it in the U.S.

The interior borrows much from the S-Class, though it's not as lavish. Mercedes' new Cockpit

Management and Data System incorporates all audio, telematics, and telecommunication functions

including the radio, CD player, navigation, car phone, and voice controller.

The exterior also borrows heavily from the S-Class. The tail lamps, and side panels are almost

identical to Mercedes' flagship. Xenon gas discharge headlamps are a new option for the C-Class, and

Brake Assist, side airbags, and window bags come standard this year, making this the safest C-Class

ever.

The C43 AMG has been replaced by a less powerful C32 AMG, which contains a 3.2-liter

supercharged V-6. The C230 has been replaced by the C240 with a 2.6-liter, 170-horsepower engine.

Or, if you crave more power, you can get the C320 with a 3.2-liter 218 horsepower V-6.

As one can see, the 2001 C-Class has been redesigned from top to bottom, and has little resemblance

to its predecessor. It's more than just a smaller version of the S-Class, but simply the best C-Class

ever. So were there any parts carried over from the previous model? We used the same wheel nuts as

in the outoing model," said DaimlerChrysler Board of Management Jurgen Hubbert.
